Sometimes Justice Prevails…. and why I always film cops….

The verdict just came in on the George Floyd Case …. I have been crying …. crying for the Floyd’s family…. crying for relief … This case was a hard one for me …

Its a personal reflection pehaps tainted with a bit of PTSD … My partner Tracy was in a similar situation almost 5 years ago and as I stood there in shock (cops are not suppose to act this way) I was screaming for the cop to stop and filming the interaction… but in that moment I heard him saying I can’t breath and watching the cop pound his head into the pavement. one… two… three … four… five … six … seven…. I stepped up closer and reached down to grab the cops arm….

A young kid on the other side of the cop was standing in shock not knowing what to do… He started towards the cop .. the cop didn’t notice me but he noticed the kid and yelled ” Get back or I will arrest you too” The kid stepped back and the cop noticed me and screamed at me … You will be next… get back… I saw him fumbling at his gun… In that split second I had a decision to make … get arrested and probably beaten up too…maybe shot or step back and keep filming… I stepped back and heard him yell into his microphone … officer down…. I was already hearing sirens … I don’t know who called … but I thank them…

The cops showed up 11 cars making a total of 12 cops cars in front of our house … two of the officers pull up and pull the cop off Tracy … they drag him to a car as I am blocked by a sargent that I have spoken with multiple times and am friendly with … He asks me what happend and I tell him … when I tell him I want Tracy taken to the hospital he says he can’t do anything …

My activist side training breaks in (Never talk to the cops) and I realize I have to move … I walk away from the cop telling him… ” That cop is going to kill someone someday.” .and head into the house to call for help… I head to the police station with Tracy’s medication … he can die without it… a neighbor sees me and gives me a ride to the station…

I get to the station … 2 of the cops behind the plastic are laughing about Tracy getting beaten up… I pound on the glass to get their attention… one of the cops realizes … and the 2 cops disappear… I get directed to another place … I hear voices through the door… angry voices … then I hear Tracy saying no … thats not right… no one answers the bell… I yell and pound on the metal door … no answer … I go back to the front … they send me back after I tell them if he doesn’t get his meds he could die… like the woman who had died a week previously in their custody…. I tell them that they need to send him to the hospital … he has had previousy blood clots in his brain and if the cops hit that spot … I am terrified …. they take the meds … and I yell through the door to Tracy that I brought his meds … He didn’t hear it …

I go outside and call my brother … he comes and gets me and calms me down … gets me home and I call a fellow activist and he calls a lawyer friend … who tells me what to expect and that she will help me try to find out if they took him to the hospital…. I spend the night pacing and talking to friends…

The next morning I head to the jail to find out if I can bail him out … its Friday … and they advise me he hasn’t been processed so I can’t post bail … its been over 12 hours and I go outside and call the lawyer … she tells me that he will be there until Monday…. she will keep calling to try and get info I call my activist peeps….

That weekend the jail received so many calls it brotke their phone system… literally … they had to assign people to answer the phones …( Never underestimate the power of the people) By Monday morning the lawyer had made 100’s of calls with no answers she tells me to meet her at the courthouse and as I am headed there I see Tracy come stumbling down the street… I grab him and can tell that he is completely out of it … I cross the street and sit him down and check him over … I start walking towards my brothers car as I see the lawyer drive by … she stops in the middle of the street and comes and says whats going on … I tell her I found him wandering down the street … she hustles all of us into her car … we go to the local Denny’s and she pulls out a recorder and starts photographing Tracy…

We find out he got roughed up by a couple of the sherriffs in the jail… when a guy came in out of breath and sweating saying he was having a heart attack and they ignored him …. Tracy said they needed to take him to the hospital or his blood would be on their hands….. Yes they had been yelling at him to shut the fuck up when I heard yelling through the door… and slammed him into a wall … we found out they kept him in to holding cell the entire weekend and he handled it by talking about police brutality and black lives matter… the other people kept an eye out for him…

This started a process of multiple court dates all which the judges tossed out after they saw video … o@accidentalactivistsite ne actually apoligized to Tracy on behalf of the city… the cop changed stories and the District Attorney changed charges multiple times along with the cop’s story… Thanks to the genius of a couple of lawyers and a lawsuit against the city … NO jail or 8 years of prison but the cops had to get cameras and the squad cars had to get real cameras … if I hadn’t had video … things could have gone very differently…

But the cop…. he took leave (mandated hopefully ) paid leave… and 2 years later he killed a disabled man… the man was from everything we know bi polar or schitzophrenic and was threatening a woman … he also shot the woman he was trying to save … we learned he had multiple complaints … back on leave due to getting a bullet in his lower posterior…

But he magically started showing up at various neighbors house and I kept photographing him. I asked a couple of neighbors after I saw him and they told me he was stalking us … Should we have filed another lawsuit … probably …

But we decided to settle the lawsuit and leave. The last I heard he was now a “detective with an office job” and was still with the police force… Hopefully he has now learned about the US constitution which he had failed numerous times in his education…. the city has learned that cameras matter and truth matters … I pray he doesn’t kill another person…

The current Attorney General of the state of MI is investigating bad cops and police forces in several cities … Its become apparent to even the powers that be … that we have problems in the police departments … that change must be done … we must get rid of the bad cops …. we have to get rid of them if there is ever going to be a chance for America … we must change the system… our justice system is broken…

You see now when I see a cop pull someone over … I start filming … I have watched to many people hurt and killed by the cops… We were lucky I think if the cops hadn’t been called Tracy would be dead and maybe me… maybe that young teenager…

But so many are not … its time to change … Hopefully, the verdict today will help …. I know those who stood there as George Floyd lay dying are dealing with a lot of guilt as I feel guilt for not jumping on the cop that hurt Tracy… Tracy still is dealing with after effects 5 years later …. We both do not deal with cops well to this day…. (and yes I have cops in my family)

So the next time you see someone dealing with the police … pull out that camera phone … You might be the person who sends a bad cop to prison…. you might save someones life by filming … You might keep someone innocent from going to prison….

You also can down load apps that can save your life by the ACLU … I have 5 vehical cameras but added a couple of extra Its an RV… (due to activism) I always go out with a fully charge phone…

So tonight say a prayer or what ever you do for the Floyd family and for those who stood there and filmed his death… then keep on fighting for justice for all…..
